Davis Race Weekend - by K. Pearsons

This weekend the WCCC trekked out to Auburn State Recreation Area, a Californian favorite mountain bike destination. This past weekend was the first mountain bike race UC Davis has hosted in years and they came back with a bang! Saturday’s short track was a blast — a very short quarter mile course on a motocross track with plenty of bermed turns and great spectator viewing/heckling. William Curtis (UC Santa Cruz) won Men’s A’s and UCD’s own Diane Moug (who wonderfully organized this race weekend) won Women’s A’s. The afternoon’s Downhill race, full of hairpin turns and steep descents, was won by Dane Peterson (CSU Chico) and Alison Osgood (CSU Humboldt) who currently lead Men’s A’s and Women’s A’s for gravity. Sunday’s 9 mile cross country loop started off dusty and fast but the later creek crossings and steep climbs certainly separated the men from the boys. Christopher Braunholz (UC Berkeley) won Men’s A’s and Shayna Powless (UCLA) won Women’s A’s. As we head off to our the WCCC Championship next weekend, Humboldt State is our leading team while Jason Brinsfield (Cal Poly) and Erika Pearsons (CSU Sacramento) wear the yellow jersey. The Conference Championships is our last mountain race of the season and will be hosted by UC Santa Cruz at Boggs Mountain State Forest.
