Stanford Race Weekend - by S. Beard

The collegiate road season started this weekend with a circuit race and road race both put on by the Stanford cycling team.  Saturday started with a rainy time trial, but by the time the circuit races started the clouds began to clear and the sun came out.  Saturday was well attended with large fields in all of the lower categories including one of the biggest Women’s B/C fields seen in a while.

In the Women’s A circuit race on Saturday UC Davis’ rider Julia Reese won in a nail biting finish over Stanford rider Taylor Burdge.  Only five of the women’s A riders attended the race and the pace started off slow but after Stanford attacked multiple times one stuck, creating a break away consisting of Taylor Burdge and Julia Reese.  For the Men’s A race the pace started off fast and only got faster as the race progressed.  Part way through there was a break away that held for the entire race resulting in a sprint at the end between a UC Berkeley rider and a Stanford rider with UC Berkeley taking the win.

Sunday began with a rain start to the road race.  The women’s A race started off with a field of 6 riders from Stanford, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and UC Santa Barbara.  The first three laps weren’t too exciting and then on the fourth lap Taylor and Anne Laure from Stanford attacked on Hennekens Ranch Road.  On the descent the field regrouped for the most part until a second attack by Stanford on the same climb.  Finally on the last lap, Stanford’s attack up Hennekens Ranch Road stuck.  The final placing was Anne Laure Strong (Stanford), Taylor Burdge (Stanford), Sarah Beard (UC Davis), Julia Reese (UC Davis), Naomi Hester (UC Berkeley), and Jessica Baumgardner (UC Santa Barbara).
