UNR Race Weekend - by S. Thompson

The biggest little city in the world played host to the windiest little bike race ever this weekend as the University of Nevada, Reno hosted the last WCCC race weekend before conference championships.

The Saturday morning TTT was hotly contested in the A categories as the UC Davis women edged out Stanford by a mere 16 seconds. Stanford bested Davis and San Diego in the Men's A TTT in another close race.

The wind howled for the afternoon criterium and it, along with a technical, hilly course, broke most of the races wide open. The men's A race was animated from the gun. Countless small breaks formed but nothing got out of sight. A flying Conner Benton (UC Berkeley) bested JAKROO leader’s jersey wearer and omnium leader John Tomlinson (USC) and Blake Anton (Cal Poly) in the field sprint up the final rise and took home a well deserved win. The women's A race faced the same dynamics with a tight sprint finish. Dani Haulman showed her JAKROO yellow jersey talent by out sprinting UC Berkeley’s Katie Hall for first place against the tough wind.

Sunday's road race featured two out and back laps on the scenic Red Rock Road. The 88 mile men's A race was decided early when a group of nine riders including four from Stanford went up the road. A few others bridged up from the main pack throughout the race but in the end Paul Summers (Stanford) won for the second week in a row with a solo effort for last 25 miles.

The 69 mile women's A race stayed together until the last climb when a few riders were spit out the back. Angharah Porteous (Stanford) eked out the win, outsprinting Erica Grief (UNR) at the line.

Many riders look to be on top form and motivated heading into next weekend's conference champs at UC Davis and Nationals shortly after.
