Gretchen Stumhofer (UCSD) Takes 1st at Nationals - by USAC

Asheville, NC (May 8, 2015) --  Four national champions were crowned on Friday as the 2015 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships kicked off in Asheville with exciting road race action.

The women were the first to take on the challenging course which featured plenty of climbing, as well as some technical descents over the 78.9 kilometers.

In an incredibly aggressive D1 race, Gretchen Stumhofer (University of California – San Diego) got away from the field and went solo for the last ten miles to take the win. She crossed the finish line 32 seconds ahead of silver and bronze medalists Laurel Rathbun (Marian University) and Lenore Pipes (Cornell University).

"I got away on the descent about half way through the climbing section," she said afterwards. "It's pretty technical so I just opened up a gap. There's a hill after that and I decided it was a good time to go. With two miles to go, I thought I could keep them off but until then I was just going as hard as I could. The last two miles were rough. It's hard to keep off a big group of girls."

In the D1 event, a group of three got off the front for the final lap-and-a-half and ended up creating a substantial gap on the rest of the field.
